Scolecite, a hydrated calcium silicate, falls under the zeolite group as a tectosilicate mineral. It contains minor sodium and trace amounts of potassium, with no presence of barium, strontium, iron, or magnesium. Structurally, it shares similarities with mesolite and natrolite but doesn't form a continuous chemical series with either. Coined in 1813, its name originates from the Greek word "σκώληξ" (sko-lecks), reflecting its characteristic response to the blowpipe flame.
