Limonite
Fort Woods, Missouri, USA
Dimensions: 5.8 × 4.5 × 1.5 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 144, included with specimen. Label also notes that the specimen was collected as a gift.
A richly colored Limonite specimen displaying a striking combination of deep rusty orange, golden ochre, and dark earthy brown. The broad, irregular surface is covered in a fine-grained, matte coating of iron oxides, while the exposed edges reveal darker, more compact material beneath. Its angular form and contrasting textures give this specimen the characteristic appearance of naturally weathered iron-rich rock.
Limonite is a traditional mineralogical term for naturally occurring mixtures of hydrated iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, commonly dominated by goethite. It forms through the weathering and oxidation of iron-bearing minerals and is responsible for many of the yellow, orange, and reddish-brown colors found in soils and rocks. Missouri has a long history of iron mineralization and mining, making this vintage-labeled specimen an interesting example of the state's geological heritage.
