A small polished Thomsonite nodule displaying beautiful radiating “eye” patterns in soft white, cream, pink, reddish-orange, and muted lavender-gray. Fine reddish fibers radiate outward from darker centers, creating the distinctive starburst and concentric patterns prized in Lake Superior Thomsonite.
Thomsonite is a zeolite mineral that formed within cavities in the ancient basaltic lava flows surrounding Lake Superior. As mineral-rich fluids filled these cavities, Thomsonite developed as radiating fibrous aggregates; when cut and polished, their internal growth structure can produce the striking eyes and starburst patterns visible in this specimen. Historic Minnesota geological reports document Thomsonite abundantly in the North Shore trap rocks and specifically describe wave-polished material collected from Lake Superior beaches.
