Sphalerite with Dolomite
Joplin, Tri-State Mining District, Jasper County, Missouri, USA
Dimensions: 3.5 × 2.9 × 2.2 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 177, included with specimen.
An attractive miniature specimen featuring sharply defined, lustrous Sphalerite crystals associated with creamy-white Dolomite. A prominent, dark brown to nearly black Sphalerite crystal dominates the front of the specimen, displaying a striking pyramidal appearance with pronounced growth striations and complex, stepped crystal faces. Smaller Sphalerite crystals are scattered across the contrasting pale matrix, exhibiting rich reddish-brown to amber translucency along their thinner edges. The combination of bold crystal geometry, reflective surfaces, and contrasting mineral colors creates an engaging display specimen.
The Joplin area of southwestern Missouri forms part of the historic Tri-State Mining District, encompassing portions of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. This district was once among the most important lead and zinc-producing regions in the United States and is renowned for its classic Sphalerite, Galena, Calcite, and Dolomite specimens. Sphalerite, the principal ore mineral of zinc, is especially prized by collectors for its brilliant resinous luster, complex crystal habits, and rich coloration. This vintage-labeled example represents a classic mineral association from one of America's most historically significant mining regions.
