Diopside on Calcite
Locality: Kokcha Valley, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan
Dimensions: 10.3 × 4.8 × 2.5 cm
An attractive Diopside specimen featuring a prominent, pale pistachio-green prismatic crystal resting against a contrasting creamy-white Calcite. The green crystal displays translucent areas, a vitreous to slightly pearly luster, and pronounced lengthwise growth textures. Its substantial, blocky form and softly stepped surfaces give the specimen an appealing architectural appearance. Natural fractures and irregularities are visible across the crystal, while the surrounding white matrix exhibits a coarse crystalline texture with delicate cream and blush undertones.
Diopside is a calcium-magnesium silicate belonging to the pyroxene group, with the chemical formula CaMgSi₂O₆. It occurs in several geological environments, including metamorphosed carbonate rocks, where attractive green crystals may develop in association with calcite and other minerals. The Kokcha Valley of northeastern Afghanistan is particularly well known for producing large green Diopside crystals in contrasting white marble.
