Altaite on Quartz
Saguache County, Colorado, USA
Dimensions: 3.9 x 3.8 x 2.7 cm
Comes with original old tag.
An appealing old-collection example of altaite from Saguache County, Colorado, accompanied by its original catalog label identifying the piece as “Altaite on quartz” under collection number 583. A densely crystallized pale quartz matrix is richly peppered with metallic gray to silver-toned mineralization, giving the surface a remarkably lively sparkle under direct light.
Altaite is lead telluride, an uncommon tellurium-bearing mineral associated with hydrothermal ore deposits and particularly sought after by collectors of tellurides and classic Western U.S. mining localities. Colorado's historic telluride deposits produced an extraordinary suite of unusual ore minerals, making documented older material from the state especially interesting to systematic and locality-focused collectors.
