Gypsum Pseudomorph after Glauberite
Salton Sea, Imperial Valley, California, USA
Dimensions: 3.3 × 2.7 × 2.3 cm
Provenance: Older collection specimen; original catalog label No. 314 included.
Creamy-white to pale tan Gypsum forms a striking cluster of sharp, elongated bladed forms representing pseudomorphs after Glauberite. The intersecting crystals create a sculptural, star-like arrangement, while fine crystalline Gypsum gives the surfaces a softly sparkling texture.
These unusual specimens form when original Glauberite crystals are altered and replaced by Gypsum while retaining the external crystal shape of the Glauberite. Pseudomorphs from the Salton Sea region are classic examples of this mineral replacement process.
