Kyanite (Blue)
Sultan Hamud, Makueni County, Kenya
Dimensions: 5.7 × 2.0 × 0.7 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 220, included with specimen.
A beautiful elongated Kyanite specimen displaying rich steel-blue to deep indigo coloration, with lighter silvery-blue and translucent gray areas along its edges. Prominent lengthwise striations extend across the broad, bladed crystal surfaces, creating a subtle silky sheen. Warm golden-brown mineral staining and remnants of associated matrix accentuate the crystal's natural structure, while its layered growth and contrasting blue tones give the specimen striking visual depth.
Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral recognized for its distinctive bladed crystal habit and unusual directional hardness, which varies depending on the crystallographic orientation. It commonly forms in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks subjected to elevated pressures. The Sultan Hamud area of Kenya is known for its kyanite occurrences, making this vintage-labeled specimen an appealing example of East African mineralogy and classic metamorphic mineral formation.
