Magnesite
Tulare County, California, USA
Dimensions: 4.5 × 2.5 × 2.1 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 159, included with specimen.
A natural Magnesite specimen displaying a soft ivory-white to pale cream coloration with subtle warm beige accents. The specimen features an irregular, angular formation with a finely textured, chalky surface and areas of compact, layered mineral growth. Its uneven contours, granular appearance, and contrasting smoother fracture surfaces provide an interesting example of massive Magnesite.
Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate mineral (MgCO₃) that commonly forms through the alteration of magnesium-rich rocks, including serpentinite and other ultramafic formations. Tulare County, California, is part of a geologically diverse region containing metamorphic and ultramafic rock formations associated with magnesium-bearing minerals. This vintage-labeled specimen represents an example of California's historic mineral occurrences.
