A striking white to pearly Pectolite specimen dominated by sweeping, radiating bundles of elongated bladed to fibrous crystals. The growth converges toward a narrow pointed termination, giving the specimen a dramatic fan- or spear-like form. The crystal surfaces have silky to pearly luster, with smaller radiating sprays developed near the base and a contrasting patch of dark gray-green matrix remaining on one side.
Pectolite is a sodium-calcium silicate that commonly develops as radiating, fibrous, or acicular crystal aggregates. The Paterson area is a classic American locality for Pectolite and other secondary minerals occurring within cavities of the region's basaltic traprock. Several separate Paterson sites produced Pectolite, including the Upper and Lower New Street quarries, Hoxie's Quarry, and other nearby exposures.
