Atacamite
Ravensthorpe, Western Australia, Australia
Dimensions: 5.5 × 3.7 × 2.7 cm
Provenance: Original collection label, catalog no. 528, identifying the specimen as atacamite from Ravensthorpe, Australia.
Rich emerald-green atacamite forms an extensive coating of rounded, botryoidal aggregates across an earthy brown matrix. Closely packed radiating crystal groups produce a finely fibrous texture, with silky highlights visible along the curved surfaces and areas of exposed crystal growth. Atacamite, a copper hydroxychloride mineral, develops as a secondary mineral through the oxidation of copper-bearing deposits in chloride-rich environments, particularly under arid conditions. The Ravensthorpe district of Western Australia has a rich history of copper and gold mining dating to the late 19th century.
