Banded Manganese Oxide (Originally identified Psilomelane) Dimensions: 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.7 cm
This is a striking banded manganese-oxide specimen, historically labeled Psilomelane. The cut face reveals extraordinarily fine alternating bands of steel-gray, silver-gray and nearly black material, ranging from ruler-straight laminations to beautifully folded and wavy layers. That reddish-brown metallic-looking seam through the center adds a fantastic contrast.
Psilomelane is no longer considered a distinct mineral species. Today the name is an obsolete group/field term for hard, black manganese oxides that may consist of several different minerals. Material historically called psilomelane commonly includes romanechite, cryptomelane and other manganese oxides, which can be extremely difficult to distinguish without analytical testing such as XRD.
