Sphalerite (Ruby Jack)
Tri-State District, Missouri, USA
Dimensions: 4.7 x 4.1 x 3.1 cm
A nice deep crimson example of classic “Ruby Jack” sphalerite from Missouri's historic Tri-State Mining District. The specimen is richly covered with lustrous, sharply formed reddish-brown sphalerite crystals displaying complex modified tetrahedral forms. Although appearing dark brown to nearly black in reflected light, thinner crystal edges reveal beautiful deep red, amber and fiery orange translucency when illuminated.
The Tri-State District of southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma was one of America's great historic lead-zinc mining regions and became particularly famous among mineral collectors for its richly colored Ruby Jack sphalerite.
