Alvite (Zircon)- Norway
Alvite (Zircon)
Norway
Dimensions: Approximately up tp 1 cm, (3) pieces
Comes with original old tag.
An intriguing historic mineral specimen from Norway preserved in its original glass vial and accompanied by an older collection label identifying the material as Alvite, catalog number 371. Several dark brown to nearly black fragments are contained within the vial, showing subdued resinous surfaces and irregular crystalline form.
Alvite is a historic mineral name formerly used for zirconium-rich material now regarded as a variety of zircon, particularly material that may have undergone structural alteration through metamictization. The obsolete name remains important in the context of older mineral collections, where specimens such as this preserve both the mineral material and the nomenclature used by collectors of an earlier period.
