Columbite
Keystone Mining District, Pennington County, South Dakota, USA
Dimensions: 3.4 x 2.7 x 1.6 cm

A classic columbite specimen from the historic Keystone Mining District of the Black Hills, South Dakota. Thick black to brownish-black tabular columbite crystals are prominently exposed throughout a contrasting white pegmatite matrix. The crystals display characteristic longitudinal striations and a dark submetallic luster.

The Keystone district is historically important for its complex rare-element pegmatites and was an important early American source of columbite-tantalite. USGS records document columbite-tantalite production from several Keystone pegmatites, including the Peerless and Hugo mines.
