Botryoidal Chalcedony with Chrysocolla & Native Copper
Sesepe, Laiwui District, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, Indonesia
Dimensions: 5.2 × 3.4 × 1.3 cm
A delicate plate of botryoidal Chalcedony covered with rounded, grape-like formations in milky white, pale blue, and soft blue-gray. Concentrated areas of blue Chrysocolla create beautiful pockets of color beneath and among the translucent Chalcedony, with several especially attractive blue botryoids standing prominently above the surface. The thin matrix gives the specimen an elegant profile while allowing the botryoidal growth to dominate the display face.
This unusual material from Obi Island formed through the interaction of silica-rich fluids with copper mineralization. Successive deposition produced the rounded Chalcedony formations along with colorful copper-bearing minerals, creating the distinctive combination of icy white, blue-gray, and turquoise for which these specimens are known.
