Sandstone (Banded)
Custer, Custer County, South Dakota, USA
Dimensions: 4.3 × 3.5 × 2.1 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 105, included with specimen.

An attractive banded sandstone specimen from Custer, South Dakota, displaying distinct layers of charcoal gray, silvery gray, creamy white, and warm reddish-brown coloration.

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of sand-sized mineral grains, commonly quartz and feldspar, cemented together over geological time. Variations in mineral composition, sediment supply, and iron oxide content can produce the distinctive color banding seen in this specimen. The Custer area of South Dakota's Black Hills is known for its diverse geology, including sedimentary formations, metamorphic rocks, and mineral-rich pegmatites. This vintage-labeled specimen offers an interesting example of sedimentary layering from a historically significant geological region.
