A collection of five Limonite pseudomorphs after Pyrite. Each specimen retains a recognizable geometric crystal form, including blocky, roughly cubic outlines and flattened faces with fine surface striations. Their matte, granular surfaces contrast with the sharp angular shapes inherited from the original Pyrite crystals. 

Limonite pseudomorphs after Pyrite form when iron sulfide crystals undergo chemical weathering and oxidation, producing iron oxides and oxyhydroxides while preserving the external shape of the original crystals. This replacement process illustrates pseudomorphism, in which a mineral's original crystal form survives despite a change in its chemical composition. These California specimens demonstrate the transformation of metallic Pyrite into earthy iron-rich material while retaining the characteristic geometry of the original crystals.
