Gehlenite
Columbus, New Mexico
Dimensions: 6.1 x 5.5 x 3.2 cm
A substantial example of gehlenite from the Columbus area of Luna County, New Mexico, showing the characteristic massive habit of material from this contact-metamorphic occurrence. Broad gray-brown to smoky taupe areas are traversed by contrasting cream-colored veinlets, producing a striking fractured, almost mosaic-like pattern across the principal display face.
Historic geological work describes gehlenite-bearing xenoliths approximately two miles east of Camel Mountain and reached from Columbus, where carbonate-rich material was intensely metamorphosed adjacent to an intrusive body. A university collection also records gehlenite specifically from Camel Mountain, east of Columbus, New Mexico, corroborating the old label locality.
