Datolite- Delaware Mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan

Datolite- Delaware Mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan

Datolite
Delaware Mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan
Dimensions: 5.2 x 3.0 x 1.4 cm

A striking Datolite specimen from the Delaware Mine near Copper Harbor, Michigan, featuring a cut face of pale bluish-white to softly pink datolite surrounded by a contrasting dark reddish-brown matrix. The interior is densely scattered with extremely fine reddish inclusions, producing a delicate speckled appearance across the otherwise pale, translucent material.

The cut surface reveals subtle color zoning from cool blue-white along portions of the margin to a warmer blush-pink interior. Fine branching areas of dark matrix penetrate the datolite around the edges, while the natural exterior preserves the rough mineralized host rock and provides strong contrast with the exposed interior.

The Delaware Mine is part of Michigan's historic Keweenaw copper district, a locality renowned among collectors for native copper and associated minerals including datolite. Michigan datolite is particularly prized for its wide range of colors and inclusions, which can produce white, pink, red and other distinctive varieties. This specimen retains its original collection label and catalog number 514.
