Thunder Egg Agate (Sawed and Polished) Oregon, USA Dimensions: 4.0 × 3.8 × 1.9 cm Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 162, included with specimen.
A beautiful Oregon Thunder Egg section displaying a striking interior of deep midnight-blue, charcoal-gray, and smoky translucent chalcedony surrounded by warm caramel-brown rhyolitic host rock. Delicate cream-colored bands outline the irregular central cavity, creating a dramatic contrast between the dark agate interior and earthy exterior. The polished face reveals a distinctive angular, concentric pattern, with subtle variations in translucency and color that become especially apparent under direct lighting.
Thunder eggs are rounded geological formations most commonly associated with silica-rich volcanic rocks, particularly rhyolite. Over time, silica-bearing fluids deposit layers of chalcedony, agate, and sometimes crystalline quartz within cavities or fractures. Oregon is particularly renowned for its thunder eggs, which are celebrated for their intricate internal patterns and diverse colors. This vintage specimen has been sawed and polished to reveal its natural internal structure while retaining its rugged volcanic exterior.
