Pyrolusite- Mexico
Pyrolusite
Mexico
Dimensions: 3.1 × 1.3 × 1.3 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 137, included with specimen.
A striking dark steel-gray to black Pyrolusite specimen displaying elongated, bladed crystalline formations with pronounced parallel striations and a subtle metallic to submetallic sheen. The specimen features overlapping crystal surfaces, angular edges, and contrasting areas of golden-brown iron oxide staining. Its rugged texture and distinct linear crystal growth create an interesting example of manganese mineralization.
Pyrolusite is a manganese dioxide mineral (MnO₂) and an important natural ore of manganese. It commonly forms in oxidized manganese deposits and through the alteration of other manganese-bearing minerals. Although often found in earthy or massive forms, Pyrolusite can also occur in fibrous, radiating, and crystalline aggregates. Mexico has numerous manganese-bearing mineral deposits, making this vintage-labeled specimen an appealing addition to a collection of metallic minerals and classic ore specimens.
