Calcite (Var: Cobalt-bearing Calcite)
Locality: Mashamba West Mine, Mutshatsha, Lualaba, DR Congo
Dimensions: 4.5 x 4.0 x 2.4 cm
This specimen features a dense, sparkling carpet of rich raspberry-pink to magenta cobaltoan calcite across a dark matrix. The surface is almost completely covered in fine druzy crystallization, punctuated by larger, more distinct pink crystals that rise above the druse and give the piece excellent texture and depth. Under close inspection, the crystals range from translucent rose-pink to intensely saturated fuchsia, with bright vitreous faces that catch the light beautifully. The coloration is produced by Co²⁺ substituting for calcium within the calcite structure, giving cobalt-bearing calcite its characteristic pink to magenta coloration.
