A beautiful Calcite specimen from the Xianghualing Mine in Hunan, China, featuring a dense covering of transparent to translucent colorless crystals across the matrix. The Calcite forms overlapping, modified rhombohedral crystals with bright vitreous luster, creating a sparkling three-dimensional surface with subtle internal veils and inclusions.
Under ordinary light, the specimen is dominated by icy clear-to-white Calcite, with darker mineralization providing contrast along portions of the matrix. The overlapping crystal growth creates an attractive sculptural formation, with larger crystals rising above a finer crystalline coating.
Under ultraviolet light, the specimen undergoes a dramatic transformation, with much of the Calcite displaying a vivid orange-red to pink fluorescence. This response is particularly notable for Xianghualing: fluorescent Calcite from the locality has been documented producing intense orange, red, and pink responses under UV illumination.
