Almandine Garnet- Colorado, USA
Almandine Garnet – Large Crystal
Colorado, USA
Dimensions: 8.5 × 8.3 × 7.9 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 483, included with specimen.
An impressive, exceptionally large Almandine Garnet crystal displaying a substantial, blocky dodecahedral form with broad, naturally developed crystal faces. Its exterior features deep reddish-brown to dark burgundy coloration, with areas of bronze, earthy gold, and gray-green surface alteration. Portions of the crystal retain a subtle resinous luster, while weathered surfaces reveal intricate growth textures, embedded mineral inclusions, and natural irregularities. Several edges expose darker reddish garnet beneath the altered exterior, adding contrast and character to this substantial specimen.
Almandine is an iron-rich member of the garnet group, commonly found in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss. Colorado is home to numerous garnet-bearing metamorphic formations, where almandine crystals can develop into substantial, well-formed individuals. This impressive example stands out for its unusually large dimensions, recognizable crystal geometry, and historic collection provenance, making it an appealing addition to a mineral collection focused on classic American localities or substantial crystal specimens.
