A fantastic Mexican Mimetite specimen almost completely covered by rounded botryoidal aggregates ranging from pale cream and peach to rich honey-orange. The larger botryoids become noticeably translucent along their edges and broken surfaces, revealing brilliant golden-orange interiors beneath the softer matte exterior. Hundreds of tightly packed spherical growths create a highly sculptural surface across the specimen. Bilbao specimens are especially recognizable for their unusual spherical growth habits and rich coloration, making older examples from the locality increasingly desirable to collectors.
The Bilbao Mine, near La Blanca in Ojocaliente Municipality, Zacatecas, Mexico, is a classic Mexican locality best known among mineral collectors for its colorful secondary lead minerals. The mine has produced particularly attractive Mimetite, often occurring as rounded botryoidal aggregates in shades of yellow, orange, and brown, as well as other lead-bearing species.
