Allanite (Allanite Group)
Mojave County, Arizona, USA
Dimensions: 2.8 × 3.2 × 2.0 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 225, included with specimen.
A dark, massive Allanite specimen displaying deep brownish-black to nearly jet-black coloration with subtle reddish-brown undertones. Several fractured surfaces exhibit a striking resinous to vitreous luster, reflecting light across irregular, angular planes. Fine surface textures, intersecting fractures, and scattered rusty-brown areas add visual depth, while the contrast between glossy interior surfaces and more weathered exterior areas highlights the mineral's distinctive appearance.
Allanite is a rare-earth-element-bearing silicate mineral belonging to the epidote group. It commonly occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks and is of particular interest to collectors because of its ability to incorporate rare-earth elements such as cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium into its crystal structure. Allanite is also known for its tendency to undergo metamictization, a process in which naturally occurring radiation gradually disrupts its crystal structure. This vintage-labeled specimen is an interesting example of a rare-earth-bearing mineral from the American Southwest.
