Jasper (Banded) Lavic, San Bernardino County, California, USA Dimensions: 4.8 × 5.0 × 2.1 cm Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 100, included with specimen.
A striking specimen of banded Jasper from Lavic, California, displaying rich brick-red and dark charcoal-gray coloration in intricate, flowing layers. The broad, naturally exposed face reveals beautifully contorted bands, with fine ribbons of rusty red weaving through nearly black siliceous material. Small pockets and irregular veins of translucent gray to milky-white quartz interrupt the darker layers, adding contrast and texture. The reverse exhibits a rugged, weathered surface with cavities, layered structures, and remnants of pale-colored host material, offering an interesting view of the specimen's natural formation.
Jasper is an opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz, commonly colored by iron oxides and other mineral inclusions. The Lavic area of California's Mojave Desert is particularly well known among collectors for its colorful jasper and chalcedony, including material displaying vivid reds, yellows, and dark contrasting patterns. This vintage-labeled specimen showcases the dramatic banding and iron-rich coloration characteristic of jasper from this historic collecting region.
