Covellite
East Colusa Mine, Butte Mining District, Silver Bow County, Montana, USA
Dimensions: 4.3 x 3.8 x 2.1 cm
Comes with original collection tag
A richly iridescent example of covellite from one of the classic American localities for the species, this old Butte specimen carries broad, foliated aggregates of metallic covellite across a contrasting pale matrix. Under direct light, the otherwise dark material erupts into saturated indigo blue, violet, electric blue, and flashes of magenta, emphasizing the layered, almost feathered structure of the mineral.
The East Colusa Mine belongs to Montana's historic Butte Mining District, one of the country's great copper-producing regions and a particularly important locality for collectible covellite. Butte material is well known for brilliant metallic, platy covellite, including specimens from East Colusa displaying the same characteristic blue-to-purple iridescence seen here.
