Crocoite- Dundas, Tasmania, Australia
Crocoite
Dundas, Tasmania, Australia
Dimensions: 3.7 × 3.1 × 2.9 cm
Provenance: Original collection label, catalog no. 527, identifying the specimen as crocoite from Dundas, Tasmania.
A striking specimen featuring densely intergrown crocoite crystals in vivid vermilion-orange and deep reddish-orange hues. Elongated, sharply striated prisms project in multiple directions, forming intricate sprays and intersecting crystal groups. The larger crystals exhibit brilliant vitreous reflections, while smaller, more delicate crystals create a richly textured surface. Contrasting areas of dark brown to nearly black mineralization and earthy golden-brown matrix accentuate the crocoite's remarkable color.
Crocoite is a lead chromate mineral, PbCrO₄, celebrated for its intense red-orange coloration and distinctive monoclinic crystal habit. It forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of lead deposits where chromium-bearing fluids interact with lead minerals. The Dundas mining district of western Tasmania is internationally renowned for producing some of the world's finest crocoite specimens. Its historic lead mines have yielded exceptional crystal groups prized for their brilliant coloration, elongated prismatic forms, and intricate crystal arrangements.
