Desert Jasper is a trade name commonly used for a colorful, orbicular variety of rhyolite, a volcanic igneous rock composed primarily of quartz, feldspar, and various mineral inclusions. Its distinctive circular patterns and earthy tones reflect complex mineral deposition during volcanic activity.
The orb-like structures form as silica-rich lava cools and mineral-rich fluids create concentric growth patterns within the rock. Desert Jasper is most often sourced from Madagascar, where large deposits allow for cutting and polishing into decorative forms.
