Duftite with Calcite & Wulfenite
Ojuela Mine, Mapimí, Mexico
Dimensions: 4.0 x 2.0 x 1.8 cm
Dark olive-green to nearly black botryoidal duftite spreads across the matrix in rounded, grape-like aggregates, with individual globules becoming surprisingly large and sculptural toward the upper portion of the specimen. The contrast against the pale, sparkling calcitic matrix gives the piece excellent relief.
The Ojuela Mine at Mapimí, Durango, Mexico is one of the classic mineral localities of the world, particularly celebrated for its extraordinary secondary lead-arsenic mineral assemblages. Duftite is a lead-copper arsenate and fits beautifully into that oxidation-zone mineralogy. Ojuela examples are especially collectible when the duftite develops conspicuous botryoidal coatings rather than appearing merely as an inconspicuous green crust.
