Corundum
Africa
Dimensions: 3.7 × 2.8 × 2.8 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 122, included with specimen.
A substantial Corundum specimen displaying earthy reddish-brown, muted burgundy, and warm copper tones across a naturally weathered surface. The specimen exhibits a stout, somewhat barrel-shaped form with broad, uneven faces, subtle growth markings, and patches of pinkish-red mineral coloration. Fine surface striations, irregular ridges, and areas of darker brown weathering create a richly textured appearance, while occasional smoother surfaces reveal a subdued vitreous sheen.
Corundum is an aluminum oxide mineral (Al₂O₃) recognized for its exceptional hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among natural minerals. It occurs in a variety of metamorphic and igneous environments and is the mineral species responsible for ruby and sapphire. This vintage-labeled African specimen offers an example of Corundum in a naturally weathered, unpolished form, highlighting its robust crystal habit and characteristic reddish-brown coloration.
