Calcite over Malachite Old Dominion Mine, Globe, Gila County, Arizona, USA Dimensions: 8.3 × 7.3 × 5.0 cm Provenance: Attributed to the Old Dominion Mine, Arizona.
A striking old-time specimen of translucent Calcite over emerald Malachite, attributed to the historic Old Dominion Mine in Globe, Arizona. The specimen features prominent color rising from a rugged, iron-rich matrix in contrasting shades of rusty red, ochre, and dark brown. The Calcite rhombs display exceptional visual glassy depth, with overlapping crystalline surfaces and brilliant reflections that catch and scatter the light. Bright green Malachite is visible along the boundaries between the Calcite and matrix, accentuating the natural cavities and fractures within the host rock. The contrast between the delicate, translucent Calcite and the deeply oxidized matrix creates a particularly dramatic display.
The Old Dominion Mine, located in Arizona's historic Globe mining district, is celebrated for its copper mineralization and diverse secondary mineral assemblages. Associations of Calcite and Malachite reflect the complex geochemical processes that occurred within the mine's oxidized copper deposits.
