Dimensions: (2) 1.0 cm approx nuggets in glass vial
Josephinite is a naturally occurring nickel–iron alloy-bearing material associated with the serpentinized ultramafic rocks of southwestern Oregon. Classic examples were recovered as weathered nuggets from placer gravels along Josephine Creek, and the material takes its name directly from the county in which it occurs. Although historically described as a single nickel–iron mineral, later mineralogical study revealed josephinite to be a complex assemblage containing several metallic phases.
The two small, dark brown-black pieces in this lot retain the weathered character typical of old field material. Their vintage vial and original catalog label—Cat. No. 330—will accompany the specimens.
