The erythrite in this specimen occurs as rich raspberry-pink to deep burgundy-red acicular and fibrous crystals, forming dense sprays, velvety coatings, and small radiating aggregates across the brown matrix. In the close-up, you can really see the individual needle-like crystals producing that sparkling, almost fuzzy surface.
Erythrite is a hydrated cobalt arsenate, Co₃(AsO₄)₂·8H₂O, famous among collectors for its intense pink, crimson, and purple coloration. Because it commonly forms through the oxidation of cobalt-bearing minerals, miners historically regarded erythrite as “cobalt bloom”—its vivid color could literally signal the presence of cobalt mineralization.
