An older locality specimen of Melanterite from the classic Copperas Mountain occurrence in Ross County, Ohio. The vial contains pale cream to yellowish-white, finely crystalline and powdery aggregates characteristic of the sulfate efflorescences that form on the exposed Ohio Shale. At this locality, Melanterite develops through the oxidation and breakdown of iron sulfides, particularly Pyrite and Marcasite. Copperas Mountain is historically notable for these delicate sulfate mineral deposits, with Melanterite being one of its characteristic species. Melanterite is water-soluble, fragile and prone to alteration/dehydration.
