Fluorite (Dissolution)
Cave-in-Rock, Hardin County, Illinois, USA
Dimensions: 4.2 x 3.8 x 2.8 cm

A classic American fluorite specimen from the historic Cave-in-Rock Mining Sub-District of southern Illinois. Intergrown cubic fluorite crystals display rich plum-purple to nearly black-purple coloration, with translucent lavender zoning visible.

The crystals exhibit pronounced natural dissolution and etching across the faces, producing textured, subtly pitted surfaces that contrast with areas of smoother cubic growth. Stepped partial dissolution give the specimen a rugged appearance while preserving its recognizable cubic fluorite habit.

Cave-in-Rock is part of the renowned Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District, one of the most important historic fluorite-producing regions in the United States.
