Scorodite
Ojuela Mine, Mapimí, Mapimí Municipality, Durango, Mexico
Dimensions: 1.7 x 1.5 x 1.4 cm
A striking Scorodite thumbnail from the historic Ojuela Mine in Mapimí, Durango, Mexico, featuring lustrous blue crystals nestled within a contrasting dark brown Limonite matrix.
The Scorodite occurs as a concentrated group of sharply formed crystals exhibiting beautiful steel-blue to deep blue coloration. Under direct illumination, the crystals become remarkably vivid, revealing areas of blue-green color and excellent translucency. Bright vitreous luster across the crystal faces creates flashes of almost metallic-looking blue against the matrix.
Several crystals are particularly well developed, with distinct geometric faces and locally gemmy interiors. Their placement within a natural pocket in the matrix gives the specimen an especially attractive presentation, with the dark host rock framing intensely colored Scorodite.
Ojuela is an important locality for the species, having produced unusually fine blue Scorodite crystals. Documented specimens from the mine include transparent dark-blue crystals and gemmy blue crystals reaching several millimeters.
