Tridymite (polymorph of silica)
San Diego County, California
Dimensions: 3.4 x 3.3 x 3.0 cm

Tridymite is one of the polymorphs of silica (SiO₂)—chemically identical to quartz, but possessing a different crystal structure. Historical California mineralogical literature notes that recognizable tridymite is comparatively uncommon because much of it occurs at microscopic scale.

Rather than displaying obvious individual plates, this piece appears densely aggregated with an almost micaceous texture. The uniformity of the material makes this a particularly useful systematic example rather than a conventional display crystal.

Tridymite is indeed recorded from San Diego County, including historical occurrences around Fallbrook, while modern records also document it elsewhere in the county.
