Phenakite (Phenacite)
Minas Gerais, Brazil
Dimensions: 1.4 × 0.8 × 0.5 cm
Weight: 0.888 g
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 214 (corrected from an earlier number), included with specimen. Presented in a 2.1 × 5.3 cm glass vial.
A delicate, nearly colorless Phenakite crystal displaying translucent to transparent areas with a soft vitreous luster. The specimen features an elongated, somewhat flattened form with naturally developed crystal faces, subtle surface textures, and internal veils that create a gently frosted appearance. Its pale champagne undertones and irregular terminations give this small crystal a distinctive character.
Phenakite is a relatively uncommon beryllium silicate mineral prized by systematic mineral collectors for its unusual chemistry and trigonal crystal structure. Specimens from Minas Gerais, Brazil, are particularly well known for their clarity and varied crystal habits, ranging from sharply formed transparent crystals to more complex, naturally etched examples. This vintage-labeled specimen offers an appealing example of a classic Brazilian mineral locality.
