Psilomelane (Botryoidal Manganese Oxides) Locality Unknown Dimensions: 2.9 × 1.8 × 1.2 cm Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 148, included with specimen.
An intriguing specimen of botryoidal manganese oxides displaying deep charcoal-black coloration with contrasting rusty orange and reddish-brown areas. The surface features intricate rounded formations, concentric growth bands, and layered, wrinkled textures that create an almost sculptural appearance. Several natural cavities expose the richly colored interior, while small rounded nodules and glossy black surfaces provide additional visual interest. The striking contrast between the dark manganese-rich material and vivid iron oxide coloration highlights the specimen's complex mineral growth.
Psilomelane is a historical mineralogical term used to describe hard, black manganese oxide materials, often occurring in botryoidal, massive, or stalactitic formations. These deposits commonly develop through chemical precipitation and alteration processes in manganese-rich environments. The rounded growth patterns and layered structures characteristic of these materials make them particularly interesting examples of secondary mineral formation. This specimen preserves a variety of these textures in a compact, highly detailed formation.
