Manganite
Lake Valley Mining District, Sierra County, New Mexico, USA
Dimensions: 4.3 × 4.1 × 2.2 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 140, included with specimen.
A striking Manganite specimen featuring broad, intergrown crystalline masses with a brilliant steel-gray to silvery-black metallic luster. Prominent parallel striations extend across the crystal surfaces, creating a distinctive fibrous and bladed appearance. Several overlapping crystal groups display different orientations, producing attractive variations in reflectivity and texture. Small patches of reddish-brown iron staining contrast with the bright metallic surfaces, highlighting the specimen's natural formation.
Manganite is a manganese oxyhydroxide mineral, MnO(OH), recognized for its dark coloration, metallic to submetallic luster, and characteristically striated prismatic crystals. It commonly forms in low-temperature hydrothermal environments and through the alteration of other manganese-bearing minerals. The historic Lake Valley Mining District of Sierra County, New Mexico, is best known for its silver deposits but also contains manganese mineralization. This vintage-labeled specimen represents an interesting example of the district's mineralogical diversity.
