Erythrite on Smaltite
Cobalt area, Timiskaming District, Ontario, Canada
Dimensions: 2.7 × 2.5 × 2.3 cm
Provenance: Older collection specimen; original catalog label No. 277 included.
Metallic gray Smaltite forms a dense, highly lustrous arsenide-rich matrix with areas of translucent to colorless crystalline gangue. Small patches of orange-brown to pinkish alteration occur across the surface, consistent with Erythrite forming through the oxidation of cobalt-bearing arsenides.
Erythrite is a hydrated cobalt arsenate traditionally known as “cobalt bloom.” Its presence was historically used by prospectors as an indicator of cobalt-bearing minerals such as Smaltite.
