Molybdenite & Ferrimolybdite
Alta, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
Dimensions: 4.6 × 3.3 × 2.0 cm
Provenance: Older collection specimen; original catalog label No. 324 included.
Bright metallic lead-gray Molybdenite occurs abundantly throughout the specimen, displaying its characteristic highly reflective, platy to flaky texture. Yellow to yellow-green Ferrimolybdite forms contrasting secondary coatings and patches across the Molybdenite and associated pale translucent matrix.
Ferrimolybdite is a secondary iron molybdate mineral that commonly develops through the oxidation and weathering of Molybdenite. Its yellow coloration can make the alteration process particularly visible, providing a striking contrast between the primary metallic Molybdenite and its secondary oxidation products.
