A pair of vintage kernite crystals displaying elongated, bladed forms with prominent longitudinal cleavage and stepped growth. Kernite is an uncommon hydrated sodium borate mineral best known from the enormous crystals discovered in California's historic borate deposits.
These specimens retain their original vintage collection label, which records the locality as San Bernardino County, California. However, based on the mineral species, crystal habit, and historic occurrence, they are likely from the famous Kramer Borate deposit near Boron, Kern County, California, the classic locality for kernite. The original San Bernardino County locality is retained with the specimens as part of their collection history.
Kernite was discovered during borate mining in the Kramer district in the 1920s and was named for Kern County. The deposit became particularly famous for producing extraordinarily large kernite crystals, some reaching more than a meter in size.
