Steel-gray to nearly black Ferberite forms dense, highly lustrous crystalline masses with numerous bladed and striated surfaces. The metallic mineralization is intergrown with contrasting cream to tan gangue, with small crystalline pockets adding texture throughout the specimen.
Ferberite is the iron-rich end member of the Wolframite series and an important tungsten ore mineral. The Nederland area of Colorado is historically significant for its tungsten deposits and became one of the major tungsten-producing districts in the United States.
