Corundum
Montana, USA
Dimensions: 1.8 × 1.6 × 1.6 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 124, included with specimen.
A compact, naturally formed Corundum crystal displaying muted olive-gray, smoky brown, and subtle bronze tones. The specimen exhibits a stout, barrel-shaped hexagonal habit with a broad, somewhat flattened termination and gently rounded edges. Fine growth textures, irregular surface features, and a subdued vitreous to slightly greasy luster give the crystal a rugged appearance, while lighter mineral staining highlights portions of its upper surface.
Corundum is an aluminum oxide mineral best known for its exceptional hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. Its gem varieties include Ruby and Sapphire, although naturally occurring crystals are also found in earthy, gray, brown, and greenish colors. Montana is an important American locality for Corundum, particularly its sapphire-bearing deposits associated with the Missouri River, Rock Creek, and Yogo Gulch areas. This vintage-labeled specimen offers an example of Corundum's natural crystal habit and the mineralogical heritage of the American West.
