Muscovite- Spruce Pine, North Carolina

Muscovite- Spruce Pine, North Carolina

Muscovite
Spruce Pine, North Carolina
Dimensions: 5.9 x 5.2 x 2.9 cm

An impressive Muscovite specimen from Spruce Pine, North Carolina, composed of numerous intergrown books of lustrous, platy mica crystals. The crystals range from silvery champagne and pale golden brown to deeper smoky brown, with highly reflective basal faces producing a bright metallic-pearly luster as the specimen is turned in the light.

The specimen displays excellent muscovite morphology, with prominent stacked sheets, tabular books and several well-defined pseudohexagonal crystal outlines. Larger plates are intergrown with numerous smaller crystals, creating a complex three-dimensional aggregate with attractive variation in transparency and color.

The Spruce Pine Mining District is one of the classic American pegmatite districts and was historically the country's principal source of sheet mica. Muscovite occurs abundantly within the district's alaskite (very light-colored granitic rock composed mostly of quartz and feldspar) and associated pegmatites, where large books of sheet mica were extensively mined.
