Dimensions: Vial measuring 5.3 x 2.0 cm filled with small specimens
An uncommon vintage example of melanovanadite from the historic Peruvian locality where the species was first described. Dark brown-black, fine-grained to velvety melanovanadite is preserved in its original-style specimen vial and accompanied by an aged collection card, catalog no. 338. Melanovanadite is an unusual hydrated calcium vanadium oxide containing both V⁴⁺ and V⁵⁺ and was first described from Minas Ragra in 1921.
This specimen's real attraction is therefore mineralogical rather than aesthetic. Melanovanadite is an obscure species associated with vanadium-rich deposits, and Minas Ragra is particularly important in mineral history for its extraordinary suite of vanadium minerals.
Card note: The vintage card identifies it as melanovanadite from “Junasa, Junin Province,” but that wording appears to be an old or erroneous rendering of Minas Ragra (Minasragra), Peru.
